Fountain Hills Town Council denies solar panels, covered parking

Proposed civic center project

As staff evaluated long-term cost-saving measures for town facilities, the Fountain Hills Town Council deliberated the proposed project of a dual-purpose solar car port in the town hall campus parking lot during its June 16 meeting.

The proposal, brought forth by Veregy, was denied 4-3 with Vice Mayor Gayle Earle and Councilmembers Allen Skillicorn, Hannah Larrabee and Rick Watts voting no. Mayor Gerry Friedel and Councilmembers Peggy McMahon and Brenda Kalivianakis voted in its favor.

While the council was cautiously optimistic on the potential cost savings with addition of coveted covering parking, the exposure for unknown costs and uncertainty over return on investment drove the council to turn down the project.
