Fountain Hills Town Council rejects changes to selection of vice mayor

Councilman Skillicorn proposal

A proposal by Fountain Hills Town Councilman Allen Skillicorn to change how the town selects the vice mayor did not have the support of any of his fellow council members. A motion to deny the plan was approved 6-1 with Skillicorn dissenting.

“(The job of vice mayor) should be about merit and not equity,” Skillicorn said. “I want someone who can do the job and provide compromise on agenda decisions.”

The current town policy, which has been in place since incorporation, is to rotate the vice mayor position among the six council members. Each serves an eight-month term in the position. The order of rotation is based on the number of votes received at election.
