Fountain TLC

The fountain has always been the center of our community on many levels. Its beauty is constantly being celebrated with visitors, weddings, Frisbee, special occasions, family picnics and in so many more ways.

There are many visitors who come for one purpose and that is to see our fountain.

As a twice daily walker in our park I celebrate its beauty and usage but, over the past year, it has become apparent that the upkeep is lagging. The signage explaining the fountain is obliterated at both points. As visitors stop to see the fountain flowing, they mention the poor condition of the signs.

There has been a park bench at first broken, then removed and now only the pad remains. The beautifully painted wall was either not primed or sealed correctly because, in a short time, it is peeling. At first it was a small amount on the south side and now it is very apparent on the west side. I watched as a crew made some application to it after this degrading had begun. Perhaps it could have been patched but now it’s too late and too much for a fix.

There are some exciting things still in the works happening at our park. I was happy to hear FDR is joining us. Some people feel there’s enough statuary already. Other proposals are wonderful, but unless we’re committed to taking care of what’s there, it diminishes all of it.

I would suggest that the head of the Parks Department walk the park with a discerning eye, clipboard in hand, noting what has to be cared for. This area was originally planned as the focal point of our town and it is imperative we maintain what’s there before we add more.
