Fry’s has no plans to close its supermarket at Eagle Mountain Marketplace, a company spokeswoman said last Friday.

JoEllen Lynn, Fry’s Food Stores representative, responded to an inquiry after Town Manager Ken Buchanan said “rumor has it that they (Fry’s) are closing.”

Buchanan spoke about the town budget and road improvement projects at the June 13 Fountain Hills Realtor Marketing Session.

During the question and answer period, Realtor Mike Stanton asked Buchanan about the status of the Fry’s store at 14845 E. Shea Blvd.

“I’ve heard that they’re closing. I’m usually the last to know,” said Buchanan. “Keep your ears to the ground.”

Denying the report in an email, Lynn wrote, “We plan to operate as usual and serve our great customers and neighbors in the Fountain Hills community.”

Fry’s store with more than 54,000 square feet of shopping space opened May 15, 2002 as the anchor in the Eagle Mountain Marketplace.

At one time, the retail shopping center included a Pei Wei Asian Diner, Subway, Mail Boxes Etc., Nails of the World, dry cleaners and more.

The commercial units have been empty for a number of months.

In 2009, Fry’s spent $1 million on renovations to “refreshen” the property and adding features.
