The Fountain Hills Theater opened Friday night, May 8, with “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.” It will close May 24.
A silly, fun, musical comedy that will invoke memories of high school and tickle your funny bone. Last week we saw “The Runner Stumbles” in Mainstage Too, which was intense and full of angst. The variety and scope is amazing.
In a small, imaginary town a group of awkward students compete to win the spelling bee. Four members of the audience are picked to participate and I was one. My word was “albumgreasom” so I sat down fast. Look it up…could you spell it? Every performance they will choose four from the audience. Look out, it could be you.

Directed by Rusty Ferracane, who gave us the hysterical “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change,” has a great cast. Victoria Fairclough as Ms. Rona and Matthew Cary as Vice Principal Douglas Panch run the bee and are amazing. There are eight adults and one adolescent playing the roles and they are F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S.
As the bee progresses some lessons are learned: perhaps winning isn’t as important as friendship; being in first place all the time and knowing six languages isn’t always best; and having your Mom and Dad at the bee is the best ever.
Fountain Hills folks, we are so lucky. Our little theater is simply the best. Thank you to all who joined us at Broadway in the Hills to support them. It was a big success and great fun.
Call the box office for tickets 837-9661, ext. 3. See you at the theater.
