Galvin: My work with the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors

Posted

Dear Fountain Hills and Scottsdale residents,

If we haven’t met yet, please allow me to introduce myself. I’m Thomas Galvin, and I serve as Vice Chairman of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors. I proudly represent Supervisorial District 2, which includes the beautiful towns of Fountain Hills and Scottsdale.

The Board governs the county and allocates funding across its departments and elected offices. In June, the Board approved the FY 2025 budget and continued its focus on conservative fiscal policy and responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars.

We decreased the county’s overall budget by 11% and cut property tax rates for the fourth straight year, down 18% from four years ago. We also strive to maintain a lean and effective workforce, boasting one of the country’s lowest staff-to-population ratios.

Despite lowering taxes, we are still funding critical services. Nearly half of the budget goes towards public safety so that law enforcement and our judicial system can keep residents safe. We also recently launched Permit Center, a new online permitting system that makes doing business with the County faster, easier, and more efficient.

You should also know that Maricopa County has zero general obligation debt. For the past two years, we have made significant contributions towards paying down unfunded pension liabilities for retiring public safety employees, saving taxpayer money in the long run.

The Board’s mission is simple. We pay off our obligations quickly, minimize our debt, keep ample money in reserve, and never spend more than what we have. That’s why we are the most fiscally conservative large government jurisdiction in the country. Maricopa County’s taxpayers can rest assured knowing their county government is in responsible and frugal hands.
