Get over it

There needs to be a counter-point to U.S. Rep. David Schweikert’s self-serving “editorial” so some facts are presented.

The Affordable Healthcare Act (known as Obamacare) is overwhelmingly supported by the American people. It was one of the main tenets that Obama campaigned on and was re-elected on.

Schweikert ignores the fact that 62 percent of all personal bankruptcies in this country are due to healthcare costs. The American people are already benefiting from parts that have been implemented -- students being on parents’ policies longer, no caps for chronically ill children, more services covered.

And the states (CA, NY and MD) that have actively set up their insurance coverage as included in the Healthcare Act have found the costs to be much lower than anticipated, insuring previously uninsured citizens for a fraction of what had been projected (70 percent less than projections in most parts of CA).

Yet the dysfunctional Republican House continues to play games with the health of the country. They are going to vote for the 40th time to try to repeal or defund the Healthcare Act. Each one of these meaningless sessions in Congress wastes taxpayer money -- almost $60 million at this point for these frivolous votes.

It has been said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing that doesn’t work over and over, expecting different results. That clearly is the Republican House. They need to work on jobs bills, the budget and an end to sequestration.

Obama was re-elected in 2010, and Democrats made gains in both the House and the Senate in 2012. What part of this does the Tea Party/conservative movement not understand?

Schweikert and his cronies need to start respecting what the American people have voted for and quit pandering to a mean-spirited conservative base. They lost, get over it!
