Giffor: The state isn’t going to help unless it’s a charter school

FHUDS has to go through another bond request election to fund a variety of projects. FHUSD and other districts would not be in this position if the Republican-controlled government had lived up to legal funding obligations for public schools over the last 15-plus years.

But they didn’t and still don’t. The end result is facilities in disrepair, outdated textbooks, overcrowded classrooms and a lack of teachers. No wonder test results suffer.

Meanwhile, these same legislators and governors couldn’t give enough tax-payer dollars to charter schools where two-thirds of the funding goes to private and parochial schools. So, to the voters opposed to the bond request, where’s the opposition to the charter school giveaway which is going to bankrupt this state? Where’s the outcry about the lack of accountability on how funds are spent by recipients (martial arts training, Snowbowl passes, a $4,000 piano, the list goes on)? The BASIS charter school owners purchased a $6 million-plus home in Paradise Valley six months ago thanks to taxpayer dollars.

So don’t complain if FHUSD has to resort to bond funding because the state isn’t going to help unless it’s a charter school.
