Gilbert N. Somers was born Feb. 16, 1924, in Summit County, Ohio. He went to his Lord where he joined his parents, Gilbert R. Somers and Bessie Nidy Somers, and his brother, Douglas R. Somers, on Dec. 31, 2013.
Gil attended Akron University before joining the Navy in 1942 where he trained as a fighter pilot, receiving his carrier qualification in 1945. He was preparing for the invasion of Japan when the war ended. After the war he remained in the reserves until 1956.
After leaving active duty in late 1945 he went to Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo where he earned a degree in aviation and then returned to work with Goodyear Aviation Products.
After his retirement in 1980, he and his wife moved to Fountain Hills where he pursued his love for Native American people and culture and Southwest art.
Gilbert is survived by his wife of 66 years, Yvonne; his step-mother, Pauline; sons, G. Douglas (Wendy), Charles (Nancy), James (Judi) and David (Judy); a daughter, Luanne; and 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be given to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church or any veteran organization.
