During the Council budget discussion, some seemed overly-eager to not only fund the $50K request for an economic development consultant, but overtly indicated their willingness to support this department over others, even including an additional, unrequested staff person. (I have nothing but positive opinions about the Director; this is not about him.)
I have concerns about the focus on economic development and tourism, particularly with a retail emphasis, at the expense of residents. Staff requested 10 positions, but look to be granted two half-time positions only.
I question spending $30K on a visitor’s center near a new Chamber office in Park Place. To be fair, there’ve been past discussions about a visitor’s center (I disagreed then), and the Chamber moving, but these actions now would benefit Park Place, one with public dollars.

Part of the criticism of the apartments/commercial space was that it would move existing residents and businesses around rather than attract a lot of new people. We have brochures and videos to describe restaurants and attractions in Fountain Hills that are placed at Town Hall, in the Chamber’s office, plus. What is the goal?
Some residents asked me if leadership had creative ideas to attract new younger families to Town and fill those empty storefronts (37 percent vacancy, without the planned projects.) They objected to studies and expert advice remaining unheeded.
I mentioned that the VisionFH/Strategic Plan defined what people are passionate about; safety, small community atmosphere, scenic views and outdoor living. A multigenerational population is desired. Education, even post-grad, plus proper attention to funding infrastructure and economic stability, are vital, along with a welcoming reputation.
The budget should align with our stated mission and vision, emphasizing the positive characteristics natural to our hometown and important to residents.
