Girls' soccer earns section crown

The girls’ soccer team only had one match this week, but it was an important one.

The team took on Tempe High School at home on Wednesday evening, Jan. 27, going on to clench the section title with an 8-1 victory.

Following a couple big wins the week prior, the Lady Falcons needed to clench one final win in order to guarantee their spot as the number one team in the section.

And they did exactly that on Jan. 27, performing well in front of the hometown crowd on seniors’ night.

“[We] were undefeated in our section with one game to go,” said head coach Alison Mabery.

Since the Falcons were celebrating seniors’ night, the team started the competition with all six seniors on the field.

Not too far into the half, the local ladies found their first of many goals on the night, courtesy of a cross from Leah Carillo that was finished by Erika Yost.

A little while later, Yost sent in a corner kick that Courtney Wise guided into the back of the net.

While Tempe managed to find a goal of their own next, Leah Carillo decided to light up the board one more time for the Falcons, blasting a shot from the top of the 18 to earn a 3-1 lead for the local ladies heading into halftime.

According to Mabery, a two-point lead was not enough to calm the Falcons down, as the team pushed harder than ever in the second half.

“Post-season mode kicked in and the Falcons looked hungry and ready for battle,” she added.

“Dominating the second half, the Falcons recorded five more goals before the final buzzer rang.”

Leah Carillo got things started with a cross to Erika Yost, who headed the ball in for a goal. Danica Kerr earned a goal off of a free kick outside of the box, with Leah Carillo adding another goal to her night after dribbling through a crowd of defenders.

Madi Blaes finished a shot off of the goalkeeper’s hands while Meagan Coveney snuck in one final goal on the night to give the Falcons their 8-1 win and the 2016 section title. This was the third section crown for the Falcons in a row.

The Falcons are currently ranked number seven in Division 3. Playoffs began this week, with the Lady Falcons taking on Trevor G. Brown Tuesday evening, Feb. 2.
