The final week of regular play began with a road match versus the team from Coronado. This was a make-up game from earlier in the season and, as Coronado’s senior night, the road stands were packed with Dons fans as the Falcons got ready to take the field.
“It was a physical and well-played first half,” said head coach Alison Mabery.
The game actually remained tied at 0-0 until the second half, when the Falcons would finally break the silence. The first goal came off an assist from Trista Smith, who passed a ball across the box to the back post, where Emmie Lawrence slid it into the back of the net.
The local squad moved up 2-0 later in the half when Leah Carillo dribbled the ball through a group of defender before sending it into the back of the net.
Coronado was down but not out, eventually earning one net of their own on a free kick outside the 18-yard box.
Goalie Kahri Smith recorded seven saves en route to this 2-1 victory.
Tempe Prep
The second game of the week was another road affair, taking place last Tuesday, Jan. 28.
In one of this season’s typical shows of Falcon dominance, Smith didn’t have to make a single save this outing as her teammates went on a scoring frenzy.
The local ladies had three athletes score their first goals of the season, including Sydney Chesser, Courtney Dunham and Luisa Pintor.
Erika Yost added a goal with Courtney Wise earning a hat trick. Trista Smith put one in the back of the net, too, with Leah Carillo doing likewise. Danica Kerr and Marie Olson also earned goals this outing, adding to the Falcons’ 11-0 victory.
Valley Christian
Quite a bit of that momentum carried over into the Lady Falcons’ final match of the week and the final match of the regular season, a home game versus Valley Christian on Thursday, Jan. 30.
Fighting for the number one spot in their division and section and also bolstered by the fact that it was their own seniors night, coach Mabery said that the Lady Falcons hit the field with a lot of heart in this outing against Valley Christian.
“The girls started out feisty and Leah Carillo scored two goals in the first half, dribbling through the defenders,” Mabery added.
“The second half would show the girls’ true skills as they would go on to score five more goals.”
Erika Yost scored a goal, followed by another from Leah Carillo to make it a hat trick.
“Danica Kerr received a pass from Jorgi Katsafouras and sent one to the back top corner,” Mabery continued.
“Courtney Wise added a goal, dribbling down the sideline and shooting to the opposite corner.”
Erika Yost finished the game with another goal assisted by Madi Blaes, putting the Falcons up 7-0.
