Two more matches meant two more victories for the girls soccer team with the Lady Falcons handily besting squads from Chandler Prep and Gilbert Classical last week.

The team heads into the final week of the regular season ranked number one in the section, taking on Scottsdale Christian Academy this past Monday, Jan. 23.

The local ladies will be on the road tomorrow, Jan. 26, for a 4 p.m. match against Valley Christian.

Head coach Alison Mabery said the team is looking forward to this pair of showdowns because, if they can manage to hold strong, another region championship is theirs for the taking.

Chandler Prep

The Falcons began their week with a match against Chandler Prep on Jan. 17 in front of the hometown crowd.

Coach Mabery said that even though the local squad controlled possession for almost the entire first half, the Falcons were unable to find the back of the net, leading to a 0-0 score at halftime. This wasn’t from lack of trying, though, as the Falcons managed 16 shots on goal to Chandler Prep’s two.

The Falcons only took this as motivation heading into the second half.

“With a newfound intensity, the Falcons connected on a corner kick from Erika Yost to Rori Smith,” Mabery explained. “Erika Yost sent in a cross minutes later, finished by Selina Reisig.”

The third and final goal of the night for the home team came from Erika Yost, slotting a free kick past the goalie from right outside the box.

“Chandler Prep would strike back with a penalty kick to leave the night with another Falcon victory, 3-1,” Mabery added. “Charlotte Tornee ended the match with two saves and one goal against from the penalty kick.”

Gilbert Classical

Match two on the week saw the Falcons tackling Gilbert Classical on the road. Coach Mabery said the Falcons started off much stronger this outing, scoring six times in the first half alone.

“Erika Yost started the scoring rally, sending four of the six goals into the back of the net and assisting on the other two goals scored by Alaina Olmstead and Selina Reisig,” Mabery said.

In the second half, Selina Reisig took a throw-in from Ali McAuliff to score while Rori Smith connected on another corner kick by Erika Yost.

Gilbert Classical scored a goal before the clock reached zero, ending this match in the Falcons’ favor, 8-1. Jenna Rodriguez earned the win from the keeper position with six saves on the night.
