Girls win basketball crown

The Fountain Hills girls basketball team had only lost three games all season -- and two of them were to Valley Christian.

The Lady Falcons made sure Saturday evening that wasn't going to happen a third time, as the local ladies crushed the Trojans 51-36 to win the Division III state championship.

The seventh-seeded Falcons were considered the underdog coming into the semi-finals, first facing No. 6 Estrella Foothills Friday evening and then having to go up against Valley Christian in the finals bracket Saturday. Valley Christian was on a 33-game winning streak prior to tonight's loss.

Stifling defense, a plethora of fast breaks and consistent rebounding allowed the Falcons to lead throughout the game at Jobing.com Arena.

Brooke Yost scored 18 points to lead the Falcons in scoring, while center Natalie Stillwell poured in 15 of her own. The Lady Falcons were up 30-17 at the half and only allowed Valley Christian to score seven points in the third period. Fountain Hills finished the season with a final record of 25-3.
