Golf still going strong

Playing under a sunny sky and against some gusting winds, the Falcon golf team welcomed Scottsdale Christian and Estrella Foothills to the We-Ko-Pa Saguaro course on Thursday, April 16, going on to take second place on the day.

“Estrella beat us, but we beat Scottsdale Christian, so we were 1-1 for the day,” said head coach Jim Fairfield.

Leading the way for the Falcons this outing was Griffin Peters, shooting a 33. Marjorie Glenn shot a 49 to take the second spot for the Falcons, with Robbie Trudeau at 63 on the day.

Malcolm Bernabei shot a 77 on the Saguaro course, with Derek Weinreich shooting a 57.

The top four scores combined to make the team’s final standing at the event, good enough to earn that second place overall finish.

Fairfield said that the lineup saw a couple of changes for the match, including the addition of a pair of freshmen to the competing roster.

“Robbie Trudeau and Derek Weinreich did really well,” Fairfield said.

“They both have shot better, so maybe there was a little bit of freshman pressure going against some good schools, but they both did really well for us.”

While the We-Ko-Pa match sported a bit of wind, Fairfield said that the team will have even higher gusts to compete with this week when they play at Poston Butte.

“We’ll be playing four teams there and it’s always windy there,” Fairfield added.

“You just have to remember to club up if you’re going into the wind, club down if you’re going with it and play with the wind in mind.”

That match will be hosted by Florence today, April 22, at 3 p.m. Next up is a tournament hosted out of Antelope Hills this Friday, April 24, beginning at 2 p.m.

“That course is actually where state will be played,” Fairfield added.

“We thought it would be nice to get out there and see it beforehand.”
