GOP Club hears from area candidates

U.S. Congresswoman Martha McSally is on the campaign trail for the Senate opening by the retirement of Sen. Jeff Flake.

She is in a three-way Republican primary race with former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Dr. Kelli Ward. McSally had a busy Saturday, May 19, including a stop in Fountain Hills.

She appeared at the Fountain Hills Republican Club’s candidate forum. Her presentation recapped her pre-political career (she retired as a full colonel in the U.S. Air Force in 2010 after a 26-year military career) as well as her role representing Arizona’s Second Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representative.

McSally told local Republicans that if she wins the primary, she will continue the work she has started in the House.

When asked how she would be different from others serving in the Senate, McSally said, “I am my own person. I am fierce and tireless.

“You can look at my record to see what I have done in Congress. Ninety-seven percent of my voting record is with the president (Donald Trump).”

She said she has a great relationship with Trump and is committed to working with him to keep the Republicans in power in Congress.

“The Democrats think they can flip the Senate,” McSally said. “There is so much at stake, and we are going to need your support to make sure that doesn’t happen.”

After the Aug. 28 primary, the Republican winner will face Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema who is running for Flake’s seat as a Democrat.

“We (Republicans) can’t be divided,” McSally said. “The Democrat (Sinema) has a clear path to the general election. We can’t take any vote for granted, but we have to work together to win this (seat).”

In addition to McSally’s presentation, club members heard from Kimberly Yee, who is running for Arizona state treasurer; and Justin Olsen and Eric Sloan, candidates for Arizona Corporation Commission.

Others who were in attendance included Fountain Hills Mayor Linda Kavanagh; Arizona State Sen. John Kavanagh; Arizona State Rep. Jay Lawrence; and State Rep. Michelle Ugenti-Rita.

Candidates running for Fountain Hills Town Council, David Spelich and newly-announced candidate Gerry Friedel appeared, along with mayoral candidate Cecil Yates, who made brief statements about their candidacy.

The Republican Club will host another candidate forum July 21.
