The Falcons hit the road to Higley High School over the weekend to take part in the 11-team Division III sectional meet. The top four wrestlers from each weight class qualified for the state tournament in Prescott this weekend.
Leading the way for the Falcons was senior Andrew Capirchio, who won a big battle at 160 to earn the sectional crown.
Capirchio went up against the number one seeded Conner Anderson of Payson in the final round, going on to win by a narrow 4-3 margin to claim the championship.
According to head coach Luke Salzman, this matchup was a real nail biter.
“Andrew wrestled a very good match, keeping it close and getting a takedown with 10 seconds left in the match to take the lead,” Salzman said.
Newcomer to the wrestling mat, Tyler Forrest also had a big showing at the sectional tournament, taking second place at 195. Forrest made it to the finals but eventually lost to Joey Salas of Combs.
Finally, Peter Carillo qualified for state in the 220 class, wrestling a solid tournament, according to Salzman.
“Sophomores Josh Vaught and Jack Reilly were one match away from advancing to the tournament,” Salzman added.
Capirchio, Forrest and Carillo will head to Prescott this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 8-9, to take part in the state tournament hosted out of Tim’s Toyota Center. According to Salzman, it should be a great weekend of competition.
“I am really looking forward to the tournament and know the boys are also very excited,” Salzman said.
“If all three boys bring their A game, they can go very far in this tournament.”
