Ten years ago, Kristin Whitchurch’s son, Jonathan Heston, had just turned in his uniform after completing four years in the U.S. Marine Corps.
The next day, driving to a friend’s house to play Xbox, he missed a stop sign and crashed. Paramedics revived him and he was airlifted for emergency care, but by the time his parents reached the hospital, all that remained was to honor his wish to be an organ donor.
Heston was able to save at least nine lives with his organ donation, according to his mother, who entered and eventually worked for a grief support program for those grieving the death of military loved ones.
