This letter refers to last week’s Times article on “Gay protection rules sought” and the Town Council role in helping make this a local issue.
First, the good news: for months Ginny Dickey tried to get another council member to agree to put this on the council agenda. She failed because council members did not feel this was an appropriate item for the town to address.
The bad news: Ginny Dickey then organized a progressive church group to overwhelm the council during a call to the public, then convinced the council to put it on a future council agenda.

That’s where we stand today. Now the council has to decide whether to codify (town law), pledge or take a stand on discrimination.
All these options are bad! They will lead to increased town costs to enforce whatever the town does and possible lawsuits when they don’t enforce whatever the town does. This would apply even if it was only a pledge as this is such a sensitive issue that it encourages frivolous lawsuits and unwarranted costs.
This is not a local issue! This issue belongs at the state or federal level. Does the council have the guts or spine to say no?
If the council approves some sort of discrimination rules, maybe we ought to take on legalizing recreational marijuana, requiring teachers to carrying pistols in school, or criminalizing activities with illegal immigrants. These are just a ridiculous as implementing rules on discrimination.
Due to a conflict, I cannot go to this week’s Town Council meeting. I hope others attend to convey this message.
