Heat warning in effect through Wednesday

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for much of the Phoenix area to continue through 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7.

Well above normal temperatures for early June will significantly increase the potential for heat related illness for those working or exercising outdoors during the daytime or for those without access to adequate air conditioning.

A heat warning means that a period of hot temperatures is expected, in this case approaching 110 degrees. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Never leave kids or pets unattended in cars. Drink more water than usual and avoid alcohol, sugar, and caffeine. When outdoors, wear light colored clothing and a wide-brimmed hat to keep your

head and body cooler.

Take frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Public places with air conditioning include libraries, community centers, government buildings, malls, and special refuge stations.

Recognize the signs and symptoms of heat illness. Early symptoms include things such as headache, thirst, and muscle cramps.
