I had the good fortune to attend a 100th birthday party celebrating Gene Metcalf’s life at the VFW on Saturday, Dec. 17.

The party featured a discussion about Gene’s military experience during the Second World War in Europe. His experience is the type of thing movies are based on and books are written about. In fact, a book was written based on his experience. “Left for Dead at Nijmegen” is an account of his wartime experience.

Heroes walk among us and one of them is named Gene Metcalf.
