HOA voting

I just returned from my summer away to find the “Courtside Villas Summer Newsletter.” It announced the newly “elected” Board of Directors: Dennis Contino, Leo Zabella, Lois Grate, Alfonso Shattuck, Madeline Kalmbach, Mike Jones and Ted Scropos -- Congratulations to all.

But it seems all is not smooth sailing in Court-side Villas...the newsletter boasted that 98 percent of our neighborhood voted in the election for a new board -- 116 ballots recorded out of 118 homowners. Shocking because a group of my fellow Courtside Villas owners and I did not vote. Talking to my neighbors, I counted 11 households that did not vote. If we didn’t vote, who voted for us?

Didn’t anyone question that 98 percent return for a HOA election is impossible!?

Attached to the newsletter was a copy of an email from some bright homeowners who noticed the election must have been flawed. They evidently have statements from over 30 people who didn’t vote either. Well, at least someone in Courtside Villas still has a brain and the courage to speak out. Evidently they are suing for a new election and needed contributions to hire an attorney. Good for them. My nonvoting friends and I want to contribute.

I haven’t been involved in HOA affairs for years and sad to say, probably never voted for a board member -- OK shame on me, but I am a homeowner and an American and don’t take away my right to vote or my right not to vote! No one has the right to vote for me!

Shame on the board for not speaking up. Shame on the property manager, VIP, for not catching the impossibility of a 98 percent return when 40 percent is the norm. Sure glad I read that “Summer Newsletter.”
