OPINION - Please count me among the growing number of Fountain Hills folks opposed to a Charlie Kirk statue on public property and ditto to naming our Community Center or any public buildings or spaces after Mr. Kirk. Let the churches use their property to recognize him.
Public memorials should reflect the shared values of our community. Erecting a statue of Mr. Kirk, a political activist who fact-checking shows is known for spreading misinformation, promoting intolerance of protected groups and undermining democratic norms, would send the wrong message in our public spaces where all residents should feel represented and visitors welcome.
I urge the council to reject any proposals that commemorate Charlie Kirk and instead commit to supporting actions that bring people together rather than drive them apart.
