Last week, Peggy Purvis wrote a letter on voter ID laws. She has a right to an opinion with which I disagree with. In fact, polls find that 75 percent feel that there is a need for voter ID laws -- this includes many Democrats and minorities -- so she is in the minority.
But this response is not about voter ID, but her leap to the “fair election process” in Fountain Hills. Peggy Purvis stated that:
“All you have to do is take a close look at the elections in our own community to know this is a fact. To elect means to choose or make a decision. Our last election for the mayor…offered one candidate; there was no choice. Needless to say, this situation deprives us of our democratic independence and forces us into a position of submission and subservience to the greedy rich old white men and women.”

Wow! Another leap of faith! Is Peggy telling me that because no one was willing to run against Mayor Kavanagh we have the voter ID laws to blame?
Voter ID laws (in any state) did not and do not prevent running a candidate against Ms. Kavanagh. In fact, if Peggy Purvis was so concerned about not having a choice, why didn’t she run?
