It seems like just yesterday I was writing my “Short Stuff” column for Let’s Go.
Let’s Go is now digital, and I have not been as diligent about writing my column as I was when you could hold LG in your hands.
Lots has happened since I last wrote. We have left one year behind and entered a new one. It’s good to be in the new one, but it’s also amazing that I am writing this for the Jan. 20 edition of The Times. I think 2016 will go by just as quickly as 2015 did.

We spent the Christmas holidays in Denver with The Princess. Her prince charming also was there, as were his parents, sister and grandmother. We had not met them, so there was a little tension going into it.
It was nothing like “Meet the Fockers.” Fortunately, the Princess’ prince is nothing like Ben Stiller, and therefore, his family was nothing like the tightly-wound Byrneses from the movie. And we aren’t really like the Fockers, so it worked out really well.
We had a ton of fun, and a ton of snow. We drove to Denver, so our snow adventure started as soon as we started up the Mogollon Rim. By the time we got to Denver, we were totally used to driving in the white stuff (well, my better half was totally used to driving in it. I thought he would do a better job than I could, so I just let him drive the whole time.)
We had a white Christmas, with great food and great company.
Our family (The Princess, her dad and I) have a Christmas tradition of eating Chinese food on Christmas night. That works so well in Phoenix. You throw on a sweater, hop in the car, and drive a few miles to a Chinese food place you’ve never tried. (That’s the rule; it has to be a place we haven’t been before.)
In Denver, it is a little different. First, we had to take two cars. Second, despite the fact that it was a full-on blizzard outside, The Princess would not be dissuaded from her favorite tradition. (There is a reason she has the nickname The Princess.)
A tradition is a tradition. It doesn’t matter how snowy, icy, windy, dark and dangerous it might be outside. It really doesn’t matter if everyone else is freaking out because of the weather. The Princess knew everything would be fine, so away we all went, driving miles and miles and miles until we found the spot. (It really wasn’t that far away; the weather made it seem that way.)
We ended up at a really good Chinese restaurant, ate great food and now have another excellent memory of Chinese Christmas.

By now you know The Times has undergone some changes. We have a new editor, Ryan Winslett, who has been with us as schools and sports reporter for the past 10 years. Mike Scharnow is now off learning all kinds of stuff about finances and insurance. We still miss him a lot. The other reporters, Bob Burns and Barb Charzuk, took on some of Mike’s beats, and yours truly is now doing work for The Times in addition to my role as “special publications editor.”
One of my new duties is to develop Spouts. So if you have any little thing going on in your life you would like to share, please let me know.
Things like birthdays, awards, celebrations, anniversaries, family visits, vacations, surgeries, small-world stories, kids will be kids, etc. are what I’m looking for.
