For the past month, we in Arizona and much of the world have been exposed to the immigrant children issue facing the United States. Unfortunately, much of the media reporting has been very negative and not accurate towards my home country of El Salvador which in turn has propelled me to write this column.
Indeed, there is crime, gangs and lack of safety in some parts of El Salvador as it exists in most countries and portions of their major cities. A July intelligence report by El Paso Intelligence Center (EPIC) and working in conjunction with the DEA indicates that only 32 percent of the immigrant children fled from Central America based on safety concerns. The larger segment appears to be because of misleading information passed throughout Latin America regarding the DACA act and other similar Washington-based initiatives which smugglers and coyotes are using to induce families to pay up to $7,000 to bring a child across dangerous routes through Guatemala and Mexico.
My diplomatic assignment as consul requires me to protect the image of El Salvador and to further the investment and trade opportunities from foreign countries as well as tourism.

Clearly, the negative viewpoint portrayed recently impedes the progress El Salvador has achieved during the past ten years.
With the support of many Fountain Hills residents, four former mayors, councilmembers and teachers, we have enjoyed a wonderful relationship with our Sister City of Ataco for the past eight years. Three years ago 44 Fountain Hills High School students together with chaperones and teachers spent 12 days in El Salvador without a single incident.
Our other Sister City from Prescott last month sent 13 high school students to their Sister City of Suchitoto and completed many projects in the community. Suchitoto was the rebel headquarters during our armed conflict and their city is known throughout Central America as one of the safest and one held in respect over the protection of women. Once again, no safety issues.
El Salvador is many things, beautiful coastal waters, lakes, rivers, jungles but the very best part of the country is the warmest hearted residents. The media negativity will be overcome by the people who have visited and continue to visit the country and get to know our people. Finally, the Salvadoran Foreign Ministry, Embassy and Consulates throughout the United States appreciate and respect your understanding and invite you to visit.
