Immigrants

I cannot begin to imagine what goes through a mother and father’s mind when they tearfully give their child one last loving hug then watch as he or she walks down the street heading north into the great unknown. The hope, the fear, the prayer, the guilt, and the anger at it all.

So, here they are. Walking across the border and calmly turning themselves in and asking. “Will you help me?”

What should our response be? There is, of course, the legal question. Borders have to mean something. Arizonans have an easy answer to this dilemma. Elect either Republican Gubernatorial candidate, Ducey or Jones, and according to their ads they will single-handedly solve the border problem!

We cannot ignore the cost tied to housing and feeding thousands of waiting children. Though, the richest nation in the world should be able to foot this bill, especially if we close the tax loopholes that allow U.S. companies to move their corporate headquarters overseas to avoid paying taxes in this country? I wonder if Ann and I can incorporate in Switzerland and do the same?

What I find so disgusting are those conservative members of Congress who wish to demagogue this issue. “The kids will bring all kinds of diseases into the country” or “Those teenagers will become gang members.” And so forth.

Our representatives in Washington, particularly those on the far right, are playing politics with this issue. A crisis occurs and our elected officials are totally incapable of coming together and walking shoulder to shoulder along the high road.

These children and their parents have shown great courage. Most will have to be sent home. Will everything they have faced be in vain or will Congress have the political guts to enact immigration reform?

So far the chickens are winning.
