This is my response to “No Sympathy,” in the July 3 edition of The Fountain Hills Times. Many people trying to enter the United States today are doing so illegally. That means against the laws of this country. What happens to you and me when we break the law?

I have no comments concerning the first Europeans, but I do have comments on those entering through Ellis Island. Per stories and films that capture what happened during this time, we know those coming to this country were scrutinized for disease, means of support, etc. Not everyone was allowed in. Those that were allowed in were thankful.

Still, many regretted coming as times were hard and discrimination rampant. They learned the language and, little by little, succeeded and became proud Americans. At that time there were no free daily, weekly or monthly government handouts, no government forms or textbooks published in both English and another European language.

The administration is not at fault here. We welcome others who want to obey the laws of our country, but not those who crawl through any hole possible to escape into our country and live in the shadows, not those that want to expand drug cartels, not those who have disease, not those who want to sex traffic women and children. The Administration is trying to deal with thousands of people doing just that. For this, there is no sympathy. As to the man and child found dead in the river, we do not know the cause of this death but the administration did not kill them.

How long did it take congress to finally understand the crisis on the border? Many still don’t but enough pictures have exposed the truth. To all I say, “Come legally and be welcomed.”
