Oh my, Gary Zuanetti! After reading your very over-the-top letter titled YMCA in last week’s Times, which accused our President of flying drones over our borders 24-7 with banners encouraging immigrants to come across, I realize that you are a person who isn’t interested in facts.
Your letter hit all the hot spots of fear, hatred and distrust that Republicans exploit. Nevertheless I want to point out some facts regarding immigration.
1. Our president is referred to as “deporter in chief” for a reason. He has greatly improved our border security with more agents and more high tech. Borders are more secure now than ever and fewer people are trying to enter illegally.

1. Our president is referred to as “deporter in chief” for a reason. He has greatly improved our border security with more agents and more high tech. Borders are more secure now than ever and fewer people are trying to enter illegally.
2. Illegal immigrants do pay taxes. They pay property and sales taxes; usually federal, state and local taxes; plus they often pay into Social Security, knowing that they will never get that money back, since they are using fake cards. They are in effect subsidizing our Social Security system.
3. Studies find that immigrants contribute more in taxes than they cost in public services ($20 million-$30 million more). Immigrants come here to work and reunite with family members —not to get “welfare.”
4. Statistics don’t support the accusation that illegal immigrants cause crime. At the same time that the immigrant population has increased the crime rate has actually dropped.
5. According to the CDC there is no evidence that illegal immigrants bring communicable diseases.
6. Some 75% of all immigrants learn English within 10 years in spite of insufficient classes.
Nearly all economists, of all political persuasions, agree that immigrants (here legally or not) benefit the overall economy contrary to the popular opinion that they are a drain on it.
In fact, deporting all illegal immigrants, even if possible, would cause major damage to the U.S. economy.
