Imogene Hoelzen

Imogene K. Hoelzen, 84, of Fountain Hills passed away Dec. 27, 2013 at Fountain View Village.

Imogene was born in Texas in 1929 and moved to Phoenix as a young girl, attended Phoenix Union High School and lived a full life dedicated to helping others. For over 50 years she volunteered for the Desert Volunteer Braille Guild Foundation for Blind Children transcribing books into Braille for students in public schools. In 1996 Imogene was recognized for her years of service with the KPNX – 12 Who Care Hon Kachina Award.

In addition to Braille transcription, Imogene volunteered at the Phoenix Zoo, taking school children on guided tours, teaching them about the animals. In the 1960s and 1970s she volunteered her time designing and sewing costumes for Phoenix Children’s Theatre.

Imogene Hoelzen is survived by her four children and numerous loving grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives. She is preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Carl Hoelzen Jr.

A memorial service will be held at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, 12065 Saguaro Blvd., at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3.
