Isobel Gavin Coull

Isobel Gavin Coull, 95, was welcomed into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior on June 18, 2013.

She will be remembered with love and dearly missed as a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Her daughter, Valerie, and son-in-law, Edward, provided care so she could enjoy her last years of life with dignity and humor.

Their children, Todd, Tyfany, Tamara, Tory and Taylor, treasured time with their Nana and were a source of pride with their expanding broods (seven great-grandchildren!).

Isobel Ross was born at “2 the Cross” on Aug. 9, 1917 in Stonehaven, Scotland. Isobel was one of four children born to Jane Wood Knowles and William Melville Ross. She is survived by her sister, Helen Coull, of British Columbia.

Isobel was widowed by her first husband, Harry Hubbard, during World War II. Her second husband, Ronald Jordan, blessed her with an only child, her daughter Valerie Anne.

She married Charles Coull, also a native of Stonehaven, in 1976, and they spent many years with grandchildren, camping, traveling and sharing memories of Scotland until his death in 2003.

For the first 30 years of her life she lived in the United Kingdom. During her time in Britain, she trained to be a nurse and served during World War II as a Women’s Royal Naval Service WREN.

After the war, she immigrated to America and worked as a nurse for an OB/GYN in Michigan. Her final 35 years were spent in the Phoenix area where she made a loving home with her family.

Isobel was a strong and proud woman who relished her independence. Her influence was far reaching and her moral compass never waivered. She once used her intuition to save a child from a locked car in the Arizona summer sun.

She loved to be surrounded by her favorite shades of blue and would spend her days appreciating fresh flowers, playing cards, knitting and enjoying a good cup of tea. Her feisty presence filled a room and has left a permanent void.

The family is eternally grateful for the compassionate caregivers from Premier Hospice. A celebration of her life will be held on her 96th birthday, Aug. 9, at Northminster Presbyterian Church in Phoenix at 10 a.m.
