On Sept. 11, 2001, Eric Landau, a former volunteer firefighter and captain with the Long Beach Fire Department on Long Island, was in New York City for a scheduled hearing when the attacks began.
Landau was working as an uncompensated reserve member of the Arizona highway patrol at the time and had come to New York for personal business, only meaning to be in the city for a day or two, staying with his aunt.
From a New York office building half a mile from the towers, Landau watched the World Trade Center through a floor-to-ceiling window as people around him evacuated.
