James is next GOP speaker

The Fountain Hills Republican Club will welcome Charles A. James, retired attorney and executive of Chevron Corporation, former member of the Department of Justice and current adjunct professor at the Sandra Day O’Connor School of Law at Arizona State University, as the featured speaker for its next meeting Saturday, Aug. 20, at 9 a.m. at the Fountain Hills Community Center.

The topic of James’ presentation will be the differences between liberalism and progressivism, a relevant topic following the recent national political conventions as Democrat candidates and their supporters continued the debate between the two philosophies.

During his 20-year legal career, James held some of the senior-most positions in American law, including private practice, government and corporate law. At Chevron, as vice-president and general counsel, he oversaw the law, corporate governance, global security and human resources.

Prior to joining Chevron in 2002, he served as an Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice for the administration of both George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush.

Other legal work was with the Federal Trade Commission and with the firm of Jones, Reavis and Pogue. A graduate of Wesleyan University, he received his Jurisprudence degree from George Washington Law School.

The club meetings are open to all interested persons. No reservations required. There is a social period beginning at 8:30 a.m. with complimentary coffee and light breakfast refreshments. GOP candidates and elected GOP officials are given a brief opportunity to speak following the guest speaker.

The monthly social will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, at the Fireside Grill at the Lexington Hotel. No speeches, just good political conversation. Drinks and food are available for purchase.

Reservations are now being taken for the Sept. 17 Election Rally and Picnic at the Fountain Hills Community Center from 4-7 p.m. Cost is $20 for members paid in advance; $25 for non-members and at the door. Catered by Saddle Bronc Grill, there will be an extensive selection of great picnic food including hot dogs, hamburgers, brats, chicken breast sandwiches, sides and soft drinks.

Keynote speaker will be Sheriff Joe Arpaio. GOP candidates and elected officials will also be part of the program. Representatives of the Trump for Arizona campaign will also be on hand with campaign memorabilia.

Treasurer Nicole Oswald is now taking reservations at Replady2015@outlook.com. Visit fhrepublicanclub.org for more information.
