On July 4, 1776, a group of courageous visionaries gave their approval to our Declaration of Independence. Two days later, on July 6, the Declaration was boldly proclaimed publicly for the first time.

Those who in the ensuing days and weeks affixed their signatures to the document attested that, in “...support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.”

On July 4, 1776, a group of courageous visionaries gave their approval to our Declaration of Independence. Two days later, on July 6, the Declaration was boldly proclaimed publicly for the first time.

Those who in the ensuing days and weeks affixed their signatures to the document attested that, in “...support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.”

The dreams and visions of the Founders were transformed into words on paper. They sacrificed all that they had for the principles of independence and liberty, the principles which subsequently created the miracle that is the United States of America, a nation that offers the greatest freedom and opportunity of any nation in history, and a government which, in the words of the Constitution, would answer to “We, the people.”

After 240 years, we will celebrate Independence Day 2016. Let us reflect upon the courage it took to accomplish what was done in late spring and summer of 1776. Let us recall the sacrifices of those who established the foundation of the United States. Let us also acknowledge the many sacrifices made by those who followed them and offered whatever was needed, even their lives, to preserve and protect the freedoms which we enjoy and too often take for granted. Let us refresh our commitment to the dream of the Founders.

As we enjoy our cookouts, fireworks and other events of the day, let us remember what so many have given for us. Let us rely on and thank divine Providence for our freedom and for this nation – one nation, under God. Let us renew our determination to honor and celebrate the miracle and the wonderful gift that is America.
