Sheriff’s deputies in Fountain Hills continue to be on the lookout for a dark-colored vehicle with a spoiler believed to be involved in an alleged threat to two children on Sunday, Aug. 17.
According to a Sheriff’s deputy’s report, two children playing along the street in the 17000 block of Calaveras Avenue were approached by a vehicle in which the driver made a comment that could be considered an attempt to lure the children to go with him.
According to the kids, a boy, age 8, and a girl a few years older, were playing with a skateboard when they saw the vehicle approaching fairly quickly. The boy was using the skateboard in the street and got out of the way when the girl told him of the approaching car.
The driver, a white male about age 30, stopped next to the kids and made the comment, “Hey kids, want some candy?”
The Sheriff’s report indicated neither child responded, so the driver shouted an obscenity and drove off. Both kids indicated there also was a woman passenger in the car.
The boy told deputies that he believed the woman had something over her mouth, possibly tape. However, the girl reported she believed the woman’s hair may have simply blown across her face.
The incident was not reported to MCSO until the boy returned home and told his mother a couple of hours later.
A deputy responded to the boy’s home to talk with him and his mother. However, according to Sheriff’s Capt. Dave Letourneau, a written report was not made initially due to a miscommunication between the deputy and the boy’s mother.
Letourneau said that issue is being addressed internally with the deputy.
A second deputy talked with the parents and the children a couple of days later and filed a report.
Letourneau said he does not believe there is someone driving around town that is a threat to children, but patrol deputies are looking for a vehicle matching the description.
Letourneau said, however, it is a good idea to talk with your children and warn them about the potential for such incidents and the potential danger involved (see separate story on the schools page).
