Landau: Can we afford four more years of Trump?

Posted

Republicans on one of our local Facebook pages should stop obsessing about the economy and unfocused bugaboos about violence, unless it’s the documented statistics on gun violence.

Think globally, too, about whether climate change is a "hoax," the proposed abandonment of Ukraine and NATO, admiration and embracing of murderous dictators and the dozens of other issues that are more compelling than the exaggerated stories about Trump’s favorite and blown-out-of-proportion flogging words, “economy” and “immigration.” (He had his minions kill the strong bipartisan immigration bill principally authored by Republican Sen. James Lankford of Oklahoma in order to instead keep the issue on fire, to the country’s detriment.)

Neither the economy nor immigration is an existential threat, but his stated intent to end our constitutional democracy is. So is his acquiescence to Project 2025, including its White Nationalist agenda and its promises to end women’s reproductive freedom. Meanwhile, he wants to stifle Medicare and Social Security payments while imposing 10 to 20 percent (the number apparently changes with his mood) tariffs on everything from everywhere. Worried about the economy? Yeah, huge tariffs passed on to consumers is the ticket!

One thing is certain, this country cannot afford the return of Donald Trump.
