Sheriff’s deputies in Fountain Hills responded to the Comfort Inn on Shea Boulevard in Fountain Hills Friday, Oct. 7, when a man came into the lobby with a severe head injury.
The man was treated by Fire Department paramedics and transported to a Scottsdale hospital. He was later reported in stable condition.
Deputies went to the room where the injured man was registered at the hotel and located a second man. The two were truck driving partners on a return trip across country. The man in the hotel room said he had not seen his partner for an hour or more and had gone to sleep.
Deputies followed a trail of blood across the hotel parking lot toward the car wash next door. They found that the injured man had apparently had a few beers and climbed to the roof of the car wash where he discovered a network of shade screens and apparently laid down to sleep on one of the screens. His partner reported receiving an earlier message about finding a great hammock.
The screen where the man was laying ripped and he fell about 20 feet to the concrete drive below.
He managed to get back to the hotel where the desk clerk called for help.
