The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office in Fountain Hills received several calls from citizens last week about a possible scam or fraud involving someone calling and identifying themselves as a deputy.
Sheriff’s District 7 commander Capt. Joe Rodriquez said deputies responded to four reports within 24 hours from residents particularly in Rio Verde.
Rodriquez said the caller identified himself as a “major” with the Sheriff’s Office and threatened the victim with arrest, usually for failing to show up for jury duty.
The victims were asked to pay up to $2,000 to have the arrest warrant cancelled.
The Sheriff’s Office no longer has the rank of major, according to Rodriquez, and courts would not handle jury delinquency in such a manner.
