Hilarious laughter, they say, is the best medicine. If true, you can get a big dose of that medicine at the Fountain Hills Theater’s production of Leading Ladies. The opening night audience was laughing in the aisle as two bad Shakespearian actors were booed off the Moose Lodge stage.
Down on their luck, they read about a rich women on her death bed who was looking for her long lost relations, Max and Steve. Leo hatches a scheme. They should pose as the ladies’ nephews. Then they find out that the lost relations are nieces, not nephews. Undaunted, Leo, and a reluctant Jack, dress up as Maxine and Stephanie.

Played to the hilt by Terry Gadaire and Roger Prenger, Leo/Max and Jack/Steve become embroiled in a farce of epic proportions. The expressions on Terry and Roger’s faces alone are worth the price of admission. Leo/Max falls in love with Meg, who loves actors, but is engaged to the local preacher. Only one problem, Meg thinks Leo is Maxine.
So, Leo/Max devises another scheme. Max claims to be good friends with Leo the actor. From then on, Leo/Max switches between personas, sometimes in astonishingly rapid succession. Jack/Steve falls for Audrey and begins switching as well.
The stage crew is to be commended for those fast changes, complete with lipstick. Confusion reigns. Well, what more can I say? It’s hilarious. Leading Ladies is playing for the next two weekends, through April 4. I know you will enjoy it.
