As I write this, the outcome of the property tax vote is pending. When you read it, the results will be known. Many opinions, assertions and innuendos have been expressed recently. Let’s review some of them.
Some questioned the involvement of Americans for Prosperity – Arizona as an “out-of-town influence.” The organization supports government accountability. Isn’t that a goal worthy of our support? I, along with many Fountain Hills residents, believe in government accountability. AFP agreed to help us achieve it. Perhaps those who resent this supposed “outside” influence should examine the campaign finance reports of a particular mayoral candidate, and note some of the donors’ addresses.

Some questioned whether the many “vote no” supporters really understand the town’s finances. They claim that we should trust the council and staff in these matters and that we “owe” a yes vote to the town. Even some self-described conservatives accepted this notion. Conservatives should remember that President Reagan once cautioned, “Trust, but verify.” He also wisely advised us to be terrified if we are told, “I’m from the government and I’m here to help.” Those who voted no are following that advice. We also know how to read and analyze the reports and budget projections.
A budget projection is a prediction, not a fact. Do any of us accurately know what we’ll be earning or spending in 10 years, or even five years? The town’s own projections didn’t support the size of the proposed tax. Several past and recent decisions of the council also raise serious questions.
It’s the Tea Party, isn't it? The Tea Party provides education and did host the town’s presentation in March. The vote no effort was subsequently directed and financed from several independent sources, including me. We meet again Thursday evening, May 17. Details at fhteaparty.us.
