Lighting changes delayed

The Planning and Zoning Commission has delayed consideration of changes to the town’s lighting regulations.

Much of the proposal being considered deals with updating language and rules to better conform to new lighting technology. This includes converting terms such as watts to lumens, and setting a Correlated Color Temperature for the lighting at 3,000 Kelvin.

They are also looking at measures that are consistent with dark skies goals. A dark skies committee has been working with town staff and is endorsing the proposed changes.

Nancy Bill, chairman of the Dark Skies Committee, made a presentation to the commission and urged them to recommend it as presented by Interim Development Services Director Bob Rodgers.

The commission, however, hit a snag when discussing a density cap for commercial properties.

The amendment proposes a density cap of 50,000 lumens per net acre for commercial and industrial properties.

Some commission members were trying to clarify how to address the density cap if there were more than one business or property owner sharing the same acre.

The commission asked staff to revisit the issue related to the density cap and bring the proposal back at a future meeting.
