As many of you know, I was one of many opponents to the primary property tax. I believe that any proposed or existing tax should be justified by reasonable assumptions and supported by objective data.

In the May 15 referendum, the clear majority (66 percent) of Fountain Hills voters were not convinced. Now, we’re faced with an election for town council and several related questions.

Which candidates will we elect to represent us? Which candidates were also opposed to the property tax from the start? Which candidates understood that it was too big? Which candidates believe in the concepts of fiscal responsibility and government transparency? Which candidates have the experience, skills and commitment to implement those concepts? Which candidates are listening to you now and will be listening to you after the election?

I believe that we have a group of candidates who provide the right answer to the above questions. They are Gerry Friedel, David Spelich and Marcus Bulow von Dennewitz. Gerry’s background is in banking and financial planning. David’s career has been in law enforcement. Marcus has extensive experience in auditing; analyzing the finances and budgets of governmental entities. I have come to know all of them and they all have the ability and determination to serve as our representatives in town government.

The election is on Aug. 28. Early ballots will arrive in early August. Please visit listeningtoyou.us to learn more about Gerry, David and Marcus. There will also be several opportunities to meet them and share your thoughts and concerns. The first such event is on Friday evening, June 29, and there will be more in the following weeks. Details can be obtained at the website or via e-mail at listeningtoyou.us@gmail.com.
