Lots going on in town

Well, it’s that time of year again: Fountain Hills is positively buzzing with activity.

Things get a bit slow around here during the holidays as schools, sports, clubs and just about everybody else seems to put things on hold in order to coast through winter break and New Year’s.

Then, out of nowhere, the town springs to life again.

This past week has been a busy one for the Times staff. We were at the Mentors Thank You Breakfast, as well as the Pony Express’ trip through downtown.

The Volunteer Expo drew a huge crowd, as did the Silver Car Auction out at Fort McDowell.

There was also a big robotics competition hosted out of the high school over the weekend, which will actually continue this weekend in the same location.

Oh, and then there was the King of the Hills Disc Golf Tournament I referenced in last week’s column.

That’s just the stuff that happened over the course of seven days, and I’m sure I’m forgetting a couple of other events that popped up around town last week.

On the horizon, we’ve got Concourse in the Hills and Love in the Hills hosted out of Fountain Park, not to mention the Great Fair that will take over the downtown area in late February. We’ve also got the UFO convention coming up at We-Ko-Pa, another disc golf tournament and more. Again, those events are only the tip of the iceberg for the next few weeks, and things will only continue to roll into the warmer days of spring.

Despite all of that, I frequently hear folks say that there isn’t enough to do in town. I think that, being a smaller community, many just assume that nothing happens in Fountain Hills because, otherwise, it fits the bill for a stereotypical “sleepy little burg.”

The same could be said for Globe, where I spent much of my youth. Looking back, I realize that events were happening on a regular basis in that mining town to the east. Still, we always complained that there was nothing to do because Globe is a small town and nothing ever happens in small towns, right?

You’ll have to excuse me for writing so many “cheerleader” columns in a row, but these are the things that have been on my mind lately.

And how could they not be? Every member of our editorial staff had a packed schedule last week, as you’ll see from all of the stories and photos we’ve got posted from so many events.

I’ll say it this one final time: For a small town, Fountain Hills offers a lot of opportunities for folks to get out and get active. Whether you’re looking for a new sport to play, a new club to join, a musical to take in or an event to stroll through, there’s plenty going on in this “sleepy little burg.”

You’ve got to be willing to meet all of those organizers halfway, though. They can’t just bring the things that might interest you directly to your doorstep. Check out the Town’s website (or fhtimes.com, if you don’t mind a shameless plug), read up on local clubs and activities and head out the front door. It’s that easy.
