Love Letters

The Fountain Hills Theater is presenting A. R. Gurney’s “Love Letters.” It opened Jan. 5 to a full house. I saw it Jan. 6 with Judy and Jay Lawrence and they were both absolutely terrific. Written in 1988, it was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for drama. It centers on two characters, Melissa Gardner and Andrew Makepeace Ladd III. You will relate to something in this poignant and touching play that may cause memories long forgotten. Either way, it is thoroughly entertaining and engrossing.

The play follows their friendship from second grade onward. They both follow different paths, yet keep in touch via letters. They discuss their hopes and ambitions, dreams and disappointments, victories and defeats. Be prepared to laugh and cry as you join them on this journey. Sometimes, as we go through what we call life, what we really want is right in front of our eyes the whole time.

As Andy laments at the end, “Most of the things I did with her partly in mind. And if I said or did an inauthentic thing, I could almost hear her groaning over my shoulder…”

Don’t miss this little gem. Every night is a different celebrity couple. Enjoy.

See you at the theater.
