Lieutenant Commander Donald S. Devers USNR (Ret) 1921 – 2014.
“Do not grieve. I go among the stars. They, too, are my friends and await you there.”
Donald Scott Devers, 92, died at 11:40 a.m. on June 5, 2014. Mr. Devers was born in Dayton, Ohio on Sept. 18, 1921 to Amos Luther Devers and Alice (Scott) Devers.
A resident of Scottsdale since 1970, Mr. Devers was a graduate of Phillipsburg High School, Phillipsburg, Ohio, and attended several colleges and universities including the University of Dayton, College of Guam, University of Omaha, Nebraska and University of Maryland in College Park, Md.
On March 7, 1944, he married Mary Roberta Hoffman of Canton, Ohio. Prior to retirement, Mr. Devers was president of the Valley Forward Association from 1976 to 1987; manager of Sanitary/Road Districts in Fountain Hills from 1972 to 1976; Metropolitan Phoenix Chamber of Commerce Tourist Division from 1970 to 1972; and U.S. Navy Commander, Naval Aviator from 1942 to 1970.
Awards include U.S. Navy Distinguished Flying Cross, several Air Medals, Navy Unit Citation, Fountain Hills community service awards. He was a member of the Governor’s Commission on Arizona Environment; Arizona-Mexico Commission; past president, Arizona Society of Association Executives; Arizona Air Quality and Wastewater Planning and Management; Military Order of Daedalions; Retired Officers Association.
Journals include: Flight Operations Manuals, U.S. Navy, Naval Air Station, Lincoln, Neb.; Naval Station, Offut Air Base, Omaha, Neb.; Naval Air Station, Kenitra, Morocco; Naval Air Station, Capodichino, Naples, Italy; and Naval Air Station, Andrews Air Force Base, Md.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; two sons and one daughter, Jonathon Scott Devers of Scottsdale, Daniel Hoffman Devers of Phoenix, and Joanne Elizabeth Devers, Glendale; one sister and brother-in-law, Jane and George Liston of Dayton, Ohio. Mr. Devers was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. at Messinger Pinnacle Peak Mortuary, 8555 E. Pinnacle Peak Road, Scottsdale, Friday, June 13, with Military Honors to follow at Paradise Memorial Gardens in Scottsdale.
