The reincarnation of my favorite female comic actress of all time is a Fountain Hills resident.
I learned of this remarkable coincidence when I attended our Fountain Hills Theater production of “Gunmetal Blues.”
Two males and one female create so many believable characters it is difficult to remember that only these three play all the wild, crazy parts.
Stitched together by the original musical theme, they weave a tapestry of a continuously inebriated detective who raises his head off the table only to sing or speak his lines, but somehow manages to solve a murder.
The pianist carries the show forward effortlessly, but the hardest working cast member is the very accomplished actress who is on and off center stage so rapidly and continuously it is a nightmare of costume changes.
Her bagwoman scavenger, society woman, singer, heavy drinker, and lover were all roles she played very convincingly.
In the play’s funniest scene she tries repeatedly to climb up on the grand piano while singing. Her facial expressions of frustration and comedic attempts are so outlandish that I suddenly realized she is just as great a comic in this scene as Lucille Ball at her best.
When she finally makes it the silly attempted seductive pose, it crowns her whole effort. This is the best slapstick comedy scene I have witnessed on stage in many, many years. I loved it.
Congratulations to all involved in this great production.
