Marie Markowitz

Marie Markowitz, 79, of Goodyear, Ariz. died May 31, 2014 in Avondale, Ariz. She was born Feb. 18, 1935 in New York City to Michael and Lucille Sforza.

She grew up in Astoria, N.Y., attended Hunter High School and the City College of New York (CCNY), and married Seymour Markowitz in New York City in 1956.

She had a career as a model of sportswear and bridal fashions prior to raising a family. She later went on to receive an Associate’s Degree from Montgomery County Community College and a Bachelor’s Degree from Temple University in Philadelphia. In recent years she had served as a hospital volunteer in the Fountain Hills/Scottsdale area.

Those who met her found her a courageous and cheerful person who was a delight to know; her company will be sorely missed. Her husband Seymour recently died in Goodyear on March 15, 2014 but she is survived by her sons Stephen, Michael, Richard, Carl and John Markowitz as well as four grandchildren, Alyssa, Jessica, Zachary, and Gabriela.

A visitation will be held on Friday, June 6, 2014 from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at Thompson Funeral Chapel, 926 S. Litchfield Rd, Goodyear, Ariz. Funeral Mass will follow at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 13720 W. Thomas Rd., Avondale.
