Mark Dohrmann, age 69, passed away on Friday, April 12, from leukemia. Mark was born in Atlantic, Iowa, and attended Iowa State University where he majored in architecture. He was a licensed architect for 44 years and held licensure in Minnesota, California, Florida, Colorado, North Carolina and Texas, as well as Arizona.
Mark had an architectural firm in Fountain Hills since 1995 and designed and remodeled many buildings in town including the Pal’s Inn, Que Bueno, 20/20 Eye Care, the Saddle Bronc Grill, El Encanto, the Plaza Fountainside and many condo projects and private residences.
He had an interest in accessible and solar housing and won several awards for his designs including being honored by Minnesota’s governor for a solar home he designed for his family in 1982.
Mark loved going to his vacation home in northern Minnesota and to his cabin near Flagstaff, which he designed and helped build. He was a fan of baseball, football and golf. He had an interest in art and enjoyed traveling to Europe to visit museums and Gothic churches. He also loved cars and designed dealerships in Florida, North Carolina and Arizona.
Mark lived in Ames, Iowa, Orono, Minn., and Naples, Fla. before moving to Fountain Hills.
He is survived by his wife, Jill, to whom he was married for 47 years; sons, Colin and Brady (Denise); and two grandsons, Levi and Luke. He is also survived by two sisters, Karen, of Fontanelle, Iowa, and Kathy (Ed) of Lake Forest, Ill., and a brother, David (Mary), of Milwaukie, Ore. Mark’s parents, Helen and Reinhold predeceased him. Mark passed away on the same day and almost at the same hour as his father had fifteen years earlier.
Services are being planned and will be held in northern Minnesota where Mark wished to be buried. The family wishes to extend gratitude to the caring staff at Scottsdale/Shea Medical Center, the Osborn Infusion Center, and especially to Dr. David Mendelson.
