It was the mayoral candidates’ turn to respond to questions posed at a candidate forum June 13 presented by Fountain Hills Chamber of Commerce, I Love Fountain Hills (Civic Association) and sponsored by Salt River Project.
Incumbent Mayor Ginny Dickey was present along with challengers, Councilman Gerry Friedel and Joe Arpaio. Like the Town Council candidate forum a week before, political acrimony was absent from the discussion. Geoff Yazzetta, chairman of the public affairs arm of I Love Fountain Hills was the moderator for the event.
Arpaio is retired from a career in law enforcement and served more than two decades as the elected sheriff of Maricopa County. He has been a Fountain Hills resident for over 20 years. Known for receiving a presidential pardon from President Donald Trump, Arpaio said he took the stage at a campaign rally for Trump earlier in June and was recognized by the former president who is seeking another term.
