I served on the Citizens Advisory Streets Committee. Let me add my support to the observations in a recent letter from committee member Jerry Butler regarding street improvements and town finances.
The mayor and town council wisely accepted the committee’s recommendation that one-time COVID funds be used for street repair. Those one-time dollars constitute the majority of funds available last year and this year for streets. Once expended, the town will revert to an annual funding level wholly inadequate to meet ongoing needs.
There is no alternative to a bond issue. Those who suggest cutting other town costs or vaguely “exploring all alternatives” are practicing magical thinking.
